Purchased this impressive stack of books at the book fair today for only $3 of my own money! Thanks to the generosity of superstar families during snowflake wars and their dedication to collecting boxtops, our class earned $150 Scholastic Bucks! Can't wait to start reading!

When we walked into our classroom this morning we were surprised that a little visitor had been playing some tricks on us! Pinky O'Toole left us a note an hid a bunch of our chairs in the bathroom! What a tricky little leprechaun!! We also had 11 superstars complete the reading challenge for the first 2 weeks of reading month! Way to go!
Oh the joy of spring in the air! I couldn't pay the kiddos to keep their jackets on or stay out of the puddles at recess this afternoon! In fact, they discovered an ENORMOUS puddle which they affectionately named Lake Huron. The superstars were on fire today! They are so into our Steve Jenkins author study. When we read his book Actual Size, the students were inspired to wonder and ask thoughtful questions about all the animals in the text. I see a research project in our future! We also enjoyed reading a biography about Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel. We just had an all around beautiful day! Way to go Superstars!
Today at respect circle, two Superstars were chosen as bucketfillers of the month! Way to go Nicholas and Taylor! Superstars who turned in all of the February homework assignments in on time received their homework club certificate today. So proud of these kiddos!
Today, every 3rd grade received a free dictionary from the local Kiwanis Club! Be on the lookout for them in your superstar's backpack. Hopefully, they can all find a good place to keep them so they can use them for years to come. The back of each dictionary also provides information about the 50 states, US presidents, the 7 continents and much more! We worked on finishing up our Eve Bunting author study today. The students were able to come up with some great generalizations about her writing style. We began a new author study on Steve Jenkins. We are so excited to see how his style differs from Eve Bunting. It was great to be outside today during recess time! There were many exclamations of "Summer is coming!" and "The snow is melting!" Here's hoping we are done with cold /snow days!
The superstars and their amazingly generous families purchased 1,726 snowflakes!!! That means our class alone raised more than $430 for Elmwood! That is just astounding!! We received this awesome snowflake trophy to hang in our room for the rest of the year. We will get to enjoy a popcorn and movie party with Mr. Lyman and receive scholastic bucks for the book fair. However, the most exciting thing is that we raised more than $2,000 for our school in one week! JUST INCREDIBLE!!! We spent some time talking about how amazing team effort this fundraiser was and about what it means to be classy winners. There was great joy when our class was announced as the winners, but the class truly seems to understand that winning wasn't the most important thing. What beautiful hearts they all have!
So much fun was had this morning as we started our day with a whimsical breakfast in honor of Dr. Seuss. It was such a joy seeing so many superstar families!
Wow! so much has happened since my last blog post! The superstars and I have been busy learning and growing together. This is a busy week at Elmwood! We kicked off March is Reading Month on Monday with some flashlight partner reading. It was perfect for our theme: Spotlight on Reading! Snowflake Wars is in full effect! the superstars have already purchased 125 snowflakes and we are tied for 8th place. We are striving to win some scholastic bucks and maybe even the grand prize... a movie party with Mr. Lyman! All proceeds go directly to Elmwood. The battle concludes this Friday. Elmwood PTO is hosting a Green Eggs and Ham breakfast tomorrow to celebrate reading month. It begins at 7:30 and ends at 8:15. There will be coffee! Hope to see you there! The superstars have been working on division and are just rocking it! They know 5 different methods for solving division equations and understand which ones are most efficient. We are finishing up an author study on Eve Bunting. The students have fallen in love with her books! So far we have read: Fly Away Home, December, Wednesday Surprise, A Day's Work and Some Frog. Ask your superstar to tell you about their favorite! Our Valentine celebration was fabulous! thank you to everyone who donated supplies and helped out at the party. It was truly a day filled with love and kindness! Pictures coming soon. We have been surviving indoor recess and keeping our minds ready to learn with brain breaks using gonoodle.com We have way too much fun singing and dancing! |
